Our Mission About Us ASHE Central Ohio has nearly 200 members that represent greater Columbus corporations, government agencies, associations, and educational institutions serving the highway industry. Our section’s mission is to provide a forum for members and partners of the highway industry to promote a safe, efficient and sustainable highway system through education, innovation and fellowship. Our section encourages communication and cooperation among all segments of the highway industry; facilitating the ethics, leadership, and career growth of our members. ASHE Central Ohio By-Laws President’s Message Colleagues and Friends – I am humbled and honored to serve as the ASHE Central Ohio Section President for the 2019-2020 term. Representing such a talented, passionate, and respected group of highway engineers is a privilege and responsibility that I take seriously. As one of my favorite engineering quotes goes, “Science is about knowing, engineering is about doing.” I could not agree more with this as the fruits of many highway engineers’ labors are all around us in the form of public and private infrastructure. I am excited and eager to continue doing great work with all of you members of the ASHE Central Ohio Section this year. I would not be in this position if it weren’t for the exemplary leadership of our Past President, Emily Preston, and the unwavering support of last year’s Board and Directors. When I joined the board four years ago as Membership Director, I had much to learn about ASHE by-laws and all its processes. Over the years, I credit the excellent mentorship and transparency of current and previous board members for preparing me to be in this leadership position. Emily’s leadership this past year has been amazing to witness, and a lot of positive momentum has been created under her direction. A few major accomplishments in her term as President include: increasing annual scholarship payouts from $5,000 to $7,500, increasing our social media presence on LinkedIn, and landing Columbus as the host for the 2022 ASHE National Conference. The 2018-2019 year was a huge success for our section, and I vow to keep pushing forward to benefit our members. This year, my primary focus is to bring increased value for our members. While I already think ASHE is one of the best deals around for Central Ohio highway engineers, there are always ways we can bring even more value to our members. I plan to do this by spending more money on events that directly create opportunities to earn professional development hours and network with a more diverse group of professionals. We have created excellent relationships with the City of Columbus and Ohio Department of Transportation to provide relevant technical seminars that attract both public and private sector professionals, and I plan to continue to strengthen this relationship. Another goal is to continue to increase our social media presence in order to keep our members up to date on the latest announcements and news pertaining to our industry. Last but certainly not least, I plan to focus on preparing for the 2022 ASHE National Conference in Columbus, Ohio. Though the conference is a few years away, it will take a great deal of planning and preparation to make this event a success. It is a great opportunity to highlight our beautiful city and show the rest of the country the strength of our highway engineering community. There will be plenty of opportunities for our members to volunteer and contribute to this historic event, and I look forward to working with all of you. Again, I greatly appreciate the opportunity to be your ASHE Central Ohio Section President this year, and I encourage you to reach out to me with any questions, suggestions, or concerns.
